- Graduate students will apply engineering and business skills to design comprehensive solutions that satisfy important needs faced by the world's poor. The course is offered jointly by the Graduate School of Business and the School of Engineering.
"I have the top engineers at Stanford knocking on my door telling me, 'I want to give my life to social entrepreneurship,'" my friend said.
As Stanford is not only a leading engine of high tech innocation in the world (as its various departments cross fertilize ideas and products with venture capitalists in Silicon Valley) but also a world leader in entrepreneurship education (as it was recently named by NASDAQ), I think it telling that some of the top engineering students in the world are clamoring to be trained to solve the world's humanitarian crises with intensity and in numbers like never before.
Demand for social entrepreneurship education is requiring schools like Stanford to create new interdisciplinary approaches to training students to be effective change agents that combine technical, political, and economic ideas, mechanisms, and processes. Students are no longer willing to wait to get a Wharton MBA or Kennedy School MPP to start changing the world.
But why do throngs of engineers want to apply their technical skills to social problems, complications of lasix surgery. And why do throngs of humanities students with exposure to the social services sector want to attack the national and global systemic flaws that produce, or allow, great suffering.
I make three general claims:
1. Our generation sees the world as a global community, and we see ourselves, along with every man and woman alive, as equal members of it. In its place must rise one faithful to the vision of Jesus' upside-down kingdom. We must pronounce the great truths of the universe with our mouths, and we must seek to do justice and mercy with our hands and feet.
